He may have assaulted a La Broquerie arena employee last October, but a 16-year-old Steinbach male will not have a criminal record as a result.

The teenager, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty to simple assault last Thursday morning in Steinbach court.

On Oct. 19, 2016, the teen was at the La Broquerie arena with three friends where he began skateboarding, ignoring a request from an arena employee to stop.

After the teen gestured with his middle finger to video surveillance cameras, the employee became annoyed and asked the group to leave the arena.

Video showed the group moving towards the exit, when the teen took a swing at the employee. A witness described the action as a hard slap. When the teen then tried to leave the arena, the employee grabbed him by his jacket, stating he contacted the police and his supervisor.

The employee’s action ‘set the accused off the deep end’ according to his friends, Crown attorney Amy Wood told court.

The teen attacked the employee again, striking him on the right side of his head several times. The employee went to the hospital after the attack and received four stitches for a cut above his eye. The teen remained at the arena until the RCMP arrested him.

Judge Ken Champagne sentenced the teen to a conditional discharge and one year of supervised probation to allow him to get help with his anger issues. Champagne also barred the teen from attending the arena and having contact with the employee.
