This year’s Summer in the City festival will draw of its own past as it celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary. Festival organizers announced on Wednesday morning that Tom Cochrane and Red Rider will return as the Saturday night rock headliner for the 9th annual festival.
Cochrane helped launch Summer in the City in its inaugural year.
Stage and production chair Cindi Rempel Patrick said as the city joins in celebrating Canada’s 150 years, the festival thought there was no better way to do so than by welcoming back one of Canada’s most iconic and celebrated musicians.
Many who attended Cochrane’s concert at the first festival, still recall it as the best show the festival has ever mounted, she said.
Rempel Patrick said Cochrane, who will already be in the midst of a tour, went out of his way to pencil the festival into his schedule once again.
“He loves Steinbach and he made it happen,” she said.
Summer in the City will run from Friday, June 16 to Sunday, June 18.
Tickets go on sale for the Saturday night concert on Thursday, online at summerinthecity.ca and will also be available for purchase April 26 at Earls Meat Market, Steinbach Arts Council and Ste Anne Co-op locations in Steinbach.
