Two men pleaded guilty in Winnipeg court last week for their roles in a violent armed robbery last year in New Bothwell. Zachary Sean Carver, 20, of Winnipeg and Colin Bernardin Hebert, 21, of Blumenort both pleaded guilty to robbery with a firearm last Monday. Both are being held in custody awaiting sentencing. A pre-sentence report for Bernardin Hebert has been ordered with a Gladue report to investigate the effect of his aboriginal background. Sentencing dates of July 8 and Oct. 20 in Winnipeg have been set. The two men face a maximum penalty of life in prison. The minimum prison sentence is four years.

The other co-accused, Cameron Dean Dueck of Steinbach, is scheduled to appear in Steinbach court on May 1. Johnathon Joseph Day was charged with numerous weapons offences related to the investigation including possessing a handgun for a dangerous purpose and is scheduled to appear in Steinbach court Thursday.

Steinbach RCMP were informed of a home invasion in New Bothwell on Crown Valley Road at 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 13, 2013. After they secured the scene, the victim told police three or four men wearing balaclavas and carrying guns arrived at her home around 2:30 a.m. The woman explained that after she put her 6-year-old daughter to bed, she went outside to a camper parked on the property nearby to have a cigarette. She was pepper sprayed and had a gun held to her head while the others took electronics from the camper. The robbers then fled in their vehicle.

Police caught up with Bernardin Hebert in Blumenort two days later, on Jan. 15, evacuating neighbors as they moved in and arrested him. Day was arrested without incident, but Bernardin Hebert tried escaping before being apprehended by police on scene. Some of the electronics from the home invasion were turned up in a search of Bernardin Hebert’s home. RCMP executed a search warrant in Steinbach and found more of the stolen goods.
