Steinbach city council showed no leniency on a successful home-based business on Tuesday, a business so successful that it was operating well in excess of the city’s rules for home-based operations.

Council voted unanimously to deny the business, known as Tyson Method Inc., a variance to continue using a large portion of a home at 390 Brandt Street for its fitness services.

The homeowners, Charles and Tamara Tyson, had sought a variance to allow 1,623 sq-ft. of space to be used for business purposes, more than double the normal square footage limit. The application also requested a 20-user limit at the site. City rules allow for a maximum of four clients to use a home-based business at any time.

City staff presented three options for city council to consider as they weighed their decision including denying the request, approving it unconditionally, and a third option of approving the requested size variance but placing a limit of eight students at the location.

Council chose to deny the application, generally agreeing that large home-based businesses are not appropriate for residential areas and should relocate to commercial zones.

The decision means that the business must comply with existing rules at its current site, limit users to a maximum of four people and ensure that no more than 800 sq-ft. of the home is used for business purposes.
