It looks like spring is slowly pushing Old Man Winter out of the season with the forecast showing positive signs of plus temperatures for the rest of the month. Today’s high is expected above freezing, not by much, but enough to help the remaining snow and ice melt a little more. Friday’s high is expected to creep closer to the double digits with precipitation expected for Saturday and a high of 11.

Models are showing mild weather can be expected at least until the middle of next week with some nights staying above freezing. Looking a little further into the month, it looks like southern Manitoba will stay in the double digits for daytime highs, beginning April 26.

The cool start to spring is having an impact on flood concerns in the province. Prolonged temperatures of as much as 15 degrees cooler than normal have prevented ice breakup on the Red River from Emerson to Winnipeg. The ice remains 10 to 20 percent thicker than normal for this time of year.

The Red River at Emerson is expected to peak tomorrow or Saturday at a flow of approximately 35,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). The Red River upstream of the floodway inlet is expected to peak between April 20 and 22.
