An investigation is underway after a 49-year-old Winnipeg man drowned in the lake at St Malo Provincial Park on Friday evening.

St Pierre RCMP and local emergency services were called to the beach at about 7:49 p.m.

RCMP said in a release that their investigation revealed the victim came under distress while in the lake and was a non-swimmer.

Efforts to locate the man were unsuccessful. His body was later recovered by members of the RCMP underwater recovery team, who attended the scene on Saturday morning.

RCMP noted the beach is closed at this time of year and safety lines marking deeper water have been removed.

No foul play is suspected.

The medical examiner’s office is assisting St Pierre RCMP with the investigation.
