A 45-year-old woman from Winnipeg has died after the car she was a passenger in was struck by a SUV Friday evening in Anola.

Beausejour RCMP Cpl. Kelly Harder said their preliminary investigation indicates the car travelling eastbound on Highway 15 had the right of way. He said the northbound SUV on Highway 12 may have come to a halt at the stop sign but the driver proceeded before they should have.

A man who witnessed the incident but did not want his name used estimates the driver of the SUV was barreling through the intersection at a high rate of speed and did not come to a stop when he struck the car at its passenger side door.

The witness ran to the car that had rolled a hundred feet into the ditch but there was little he could do.

“It was the most awful thing I’ve ever seen,” he said.

The SUV had flipped onto its roof. The witness noticed outside the SUV’s wreckage there was an operational cell phone that had recently sent a text message. It is not known who the cell phone belonged to.

There are stop signs at the intersection but only for northbound and southbound traffic.

The male driver of the car was treated at the scene an hour after the crash occurred around 7:20 p.m. He was ultimately sent to hospital.

Emergency personnel rerouted traffic around the intersection for several hours.
