Youth cyclist hit by van in Grunthal

A female youth has been airlifted to hospital after the bike she was pedalling was struck by a van Wednesday evening on the east side of Grunthal.

Hanover fire chief Paul Wiebe said he could not speak to the girl’s injuries but noted they appear to be serious.

St Pierre RCMP said on Thursday morning that the cyclist, a 10-year-old girl from Grunthal, remains in hospital in critical condition. She was wearing a helmet, police said.

Wiebe did not know how the bike and vehicle collided but said the vehicle was travelling south on Provincial Road 205. The fallen bike was resting along the shoulder, at the intersection with Park Street.

The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m.

The 44-year-old male driver of the van was not hurt.
