The SRSS Sabres won their biggest game of the year Tuesday at the MTS Iceplex and it came in the most dramatic of fashions as the Sabres defeated the Springfield Sabres 2-1 in overtime to force a third and deciding game in their Winnipeg High School Hockey League championship series.

Ryan Friesen scored the overtime winner as the Sabres tied the series 1-1, after Springfield won game one of the WHSHL Winnipeg Free Press Division championship finals, by a 4-2 score on Monday.

The championship is on the line as the third and deciding game of the finals will be played Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the MTS Iceplex.

Monday’s loss to Springfield put an end to Steinbach’s incredible 21-game winning streak, but the Sabres hope they can end the season with a modest two-game streak with a win in their final game on Thursday.

Scoreless in the first, Eric Adams gave the SRSS a 1-0 lead in the second, before Logan Waskul tied it for Springfield in the third, setting the stage for the OT winner by Friesen.

Oliver Peters picked up the win in net for the Sabres, making 24 saves.
