We are into the time of the year when minor baseball is entering into their playoffs and regional tournaments are being held to determine participants in upcoming provincial championships.

One of those tournaments was held last weekend at Ile des Chenes as the Carillon Minor Baseball Association hosted their Mosquito ‘AA’ provincial qualifying tournament.

Coming out on top in the five-team affair were the La Broquerie A’s who posted a perfect 4-0 record. La Broquerie now advances to the Provincial Mosquito ‘AA” Championships, being held July 14-16 at St. James.

Each team played four round robin games at the Ile des Chenes qualifying tournament. Steinbach, at 2-2, finished in a three-way tie for second but was awarded second place on a tie-breaker. Steinbach will now represent the league at the Provincial Mosquito ‘A” Championships, July 7-9 at Reston.

Coming up this weekend at Mitchell is the second leg of the Carillon Pee Wee ‘AA’ Playdowns to determine a representative at the provincial championships. Two weekends ago 10 teams participated in an initial qualifying tournament, with the top four teams moving on to compete in Mitchell this weekend.

Those teams are Landmark, St. Adolphe, Mitchell and La Broquerie. Each team will play three round robin games with all four teams in action Friday at 6:45 p.m. and then Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon, all at Mitchell.

The winner advances to the Pee Wee ‘AA’ Provincial Championships, July 14-16 at Altona while the runner-up will represent the CMBA at the ‘A’ Pee Wee Provincials, July 7-9 at Swan River.

The Carillon Minor Baseball Association will also be hosting two bantam provincial championships in July, with the Bantam ‘A’ provincials slated for Ile des Chenes July 7-9. The following weekend, July 14-16, La Broquerie will host the Provincial Bantam ‘AA’ Championships.

In addition, for the first time, a province wide 13U Prospects Showcase will be held in Steinbach July 21-23. The purpose of the Showcase is to give players not on the regional ‘AAA’ team an opportunity to develop and participate in a high level of baseball and further develop their skills and interest in the game.

And coming up in August in Ile des Chenes is a major baseball event as the community will host the Midget ‘AAA’ Western Canadian Championships.
