For the second straight game in a pair of WHSFL spring exhibition games, the SRSS Sabres scored first but then were overwhelmed the rest of the game by a pair of tough Division I opponents from last season. Last week, the Sabres were humbled 34-6 by the Grant Park Pirates. Thursday in Steinbach it was the Murdoch McKay Clansmen who defeated the Sabres 45-7.

The Sabres lost in the Division II finals last season, so to compete against these two strong Division I opponents from last season is another good measuring stick for the Sabres as ultimately they aspire to compete in Division I.

Steinbach’s lone touchdown early in the game came as a result of a 12-yard touchdown pass from Harrison Pankratz to Sheycoy Selent, set up one play earlier on a 45-yard scamper by Cameron Oliver.

But the powerful Clansmsmen then took control in a hurry as they led 28-7 by the end of the first quarter as the Sabres turned the ball over on three consecutive series after they had scored the opening TD.

This brings to an end the Sabres month-long spring camp and coach Jamie Peters, who preached to his players during yesterday’s game, “I don’t care about the score, I don’t, our goal is to just go out there and win plays, that is how we get better.” That being said, Peters said all-in-all “it was a great spring camp” and an important process in their preparations for next season.

Peters will attend the WHSFL divisional alignmnent meetings in June where the Sabres will find out what division they will compete in next season. The 2016 WHSFL season kicks-off in early September.

Meanwhile, two graduating players from last year’s Sabres team, running back Patrick Maendel and defensive lineman Lucas Thiessen, will compete in the WHSFL Senior Bowl, Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Investors Group Field as the top graduating players from last season square off. Maendel and Thiessen, playing for Team Bramwell, will face Team Wade Miller.
