Huskies extend series on Charriere heroics

The Steinbach Huskies defeated the Grunthal Red Wings 1-0 Wednesday night in Steinbach to force a fifth and deciding game in their Carillon Senior Hockey League quarter-final series.

That game will be played Friday at 8:00 p.m. in Steinbach, with the winner advancing to take on the first place Ste Anne Aces in the best of seven semi-finals.

A powerplay goal by Dustin Loeppky late in the first period, with the Huskies on a two-man advantage, stood up as the winner and the lone goal of the game.

Jesse Charriere was sensational in net for the Huskies as he made 44 saves to post the shutout. Brett Gagnon stopped 32 for the Red Wings.

The one goal scored in last game’s was a marked departure from Steinbach’s game two victory at home as there were 17 goals scored in the 10-7 Huskies victory. Grunthal won games one and three at home by 5-2 and 4-2 margin.

Meanwhile, the Springfield 98s won the other quarter-final series as they swept the La Broquerie Habs three straight, clinching the series with a 10-3 victory last night at La Broquerie.

Springfield, who finished third in the standings, will now take on the second place Red River Wild in the semi-finals. Game one in that series will be played Saturday at 8:00 p.m. at St. Jean.
