Although this annual event, now into its 10th year, has seen some changes over the years, different dates, different venues, different routes, but one thing has remained constant, Let’s Run Steinbach has been embraced by the community every year since the inaugural event in 2008.

Formerly the Run for Mom, it’s all systems go for this year’s run, being held on Saturday, beginning and ending at the Steinbach Soccer Park.

Special events are planned, including a pancake breakfast, to mark the 10-year milestone.

Race co-director Greg Penner said earlier this week that registration numbers were approaching 500 and expects about 600 will line up on race day, which is an increase from last year.

Penner says much of the growth this year is being driven by the registration for the 2km Kids Run, which has grown in popularity every year. There were 170 registered for the Kid’s Run as of Monday.

Registration has been ongoing all week and in fact late registration will be taken early Saturday morning, the day of the race. Registrations will be cut off at 8:00 a.m.

It all starts Saturday at 8:25 a.m. with the Mini Kid’s Run (ages 3-5). Then the 2km Kid’s Run follows at 8:30 a.m., which is a timed event. The 5km Run/Walk and the Quarter Marathon get underway at 9:05 a.m.  The Quarter Marathon (about 10.5 km), replaces the previous 10K run.

There will be no parking at the soccer park. All parking will be at the adjacent and expansive Southland Church parking lot.

Race headquarters will be in a tent at the soccer parking lot, which is also where the pancake breakfast will be. The breakfast, which will run from 9:05 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., is free for all participants and as well it is open to the public for $5.00 a person. The race and pancake breakfast will support two local organizations this year, Youth for Christ and Recreational Opportunities for Children.

New registration and race pick-up will be held Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Urban Life building on highway 52 as well as Saturday morning at the soccer par prior to the race, beginning at 7:30 a.m. All race participants are asked to pick up their race package (which includes BIB# and timing chip) before they can participate.

Penner says it is not too late for volunteers to sign up, “We will always find a place for them.” Race registrations and volunteer registrations can be made online at letsrunsteinbach.ca. To volunteer contact Shannon at volunteers@gmail.com.

Maps for the three different race distances are also available on the website.

All races use the same start/finish line, which is on the roadway leading into the soccer park. The 5K race goes on the pathways through the soccer park, into L.A. Barkman Park and then along the new pathways beside the drainage swales along Grandview Drive, and then eventually back to the soccer park and onto the Bush Farm trails.

Quarter Marathon runners will do the 5K route twice, plus go around the hill at L.A. Barkman Park.

Penner said they are enthused the forecast for Saturday is favourable and will certainly be better than the brutally cold conditions at last year`s race.
