Local athletes shine at track & field finals

Athletes from area high school schools captured a total of 10 medals at the Provincial High School Track and Field Championships this past weekend at the University of Manitoba.

Leading the way in the medal haul was sprinter Garen Nault of Ecole Pointe des Chenes from Ste Anne who won gold medals in the junior varsity boys 100m and 200m events.

Also a double medal winner was Chloe Manaigre of Gabrielle Roy in Ile des Chenes who won gold in the junior girls shot put and silver in the junior girls discus. That gold medal in the junior girls discus was claimed by Alexandra Buhler of Steinbach Christian School.

In all, local athletes captured four gold, four silver and two bronze medals. Other silver medal winning performances came from Kirsten Hurdle from Lorette in the varsity girls long jump; Blair McGowan from Pointe des Chenes in the junior boys discus; and Kate Loeppky from Niverville in the varsity girls pentathlon.

Bronze medals went to athletes from the SRSS, including Hanna Staib in the junior girls triple jump and Janai Smith in the junior girls shot put.

Also last week at the U of M,  Steinbach’s Reese Tufford place third in the 1,200 metre event at the 2017 Athletics Manitoba Provincial Junior High Championships.

Still with track and field, the Barb Cheop Memorial Memorial Hanover grades 7 & 8 track and field championships were held Friday in Steinbach. Look for completes results of that annual event in Thursday’s edition of The Carillon.
