A total of 73 medals were handed out on day one of competition Monday at the Manitoba Summer Games in Steinbach and area.

Leading the medal count among the eight competing regions at the Games was Central, who garnered 17 medals on six gold, five silver and six bronze. The two Winnipeg regions, Winnipeg Blue and Winnipeg Gold, are second and third in the medal standings with 14 and 13 medals respectively, also with six gold each.

Eastman, who had an exceptional day in athletics, are fourth in the medal standings with nine medals on two gold, four silver and three bronze.

All nine Eastman medals came in athletics at the spectacular new track and field facility at Stonybrook Middle School, as it was a beehive of activity all day with hundreds of spectators taking in the action.

The two Eastman gold medals came in the Medley Relay. Racing to gold in Bantam Boys was Payton Falk, Isaac Gordon, Spencer Penner and Aidan Schroeder. And claiming the gold in Midget Female was the team of Kyana Brown, Saffron Hartung, Paige Heide and Janai Smith.

Eastman’s Bantam Female relay team, comprised of Talia Bartel, Jaime Bishop, Emily Hill and Reese Tufford, captured the silver medal.

Other Eastman silver medals went to Aviendah Plett (80M Bantam Female Hurdles), Aidan Schroeder (Bantam Male High Jump) and Lise Catellier (Midget Female High Jump).

Payton Falk won two bronze medals to go along with his gold as he claimed the third place hardware in the 150 metre Bantam Male Sprint and in the Bantam Male Ball Throw. Also winning bronze was Brandon Thiessen in the Bantam Male Hurdles.

On the schedule today, athletics continues beginning at 9:30 a.m., with medal presentations at the track at noon and 6:00 p.m.

Baseball continues in Mitchell. Team Eastman, who won both their games Monday, will face Interlake at 9:00 a.m. and then Parkland at noon.

The second round of golf at the Steinbach Fly-In Golf Club is underway. The golf medal presentations will be at 4:30 p.m.

Sailing continues with day two at West Hawk Lake and the triathlon will be held this morning at St. Malo Provincial Park, beginning at 9:30 a.m., with the medal presentations at 12:30 p.m.

And finally male basketball continues at the SRSS and female basketball at Clearspring Middle School. Both the Eastman male and female basketball teams go into day two of the competition with 1-1 records and still in medal contention.

Gold medal games in baseball and basketball will be Wednesday morning.
