SRSS Sabres high school football coach Jamie Peters was named the Winnipeg High School Football League Coach of the Year at the WHSFL annual awards banquet in Winnipeg last night.

Peters said it was a surprise to win the award, “I didn’t even know I was one of the finalists. I find it difficult winning an individual award like this because this is such a team sport with the contribution of the entire coaching staff.” On that note the entire Sabres coaching staff was named the Kas Vidruk Coaching Staff of the Year. That staff was comprised of Peters, along with Don Cooper, Trevor Maughan, Trevor Wiebe, John Friesen, Kerry Friesen, Taylor Buhler, Dan Erickson, Derek Plett, Brian Kobylak, Devan Rawluk, Declan Mowat, Trevor Goulet and general manager Joel Friesen. Goulet was also one of the finalists for the Assistant Coach of the Year.

Each coach in the league nominates an opposing coach for the award. Peters nominated St. Paul’s AA coach Peter Pura for the award. “I thought he did a good job, often their AA team gets overshadowed by their AAA program. Of course it was St. Paul’s who defeated the Sabres in the Kas Vidruk final at Investors Group Stadium earlier this month.

The Sabres, after a 1-2 start this season, won their final four regular season games to finish at 5-2 and then steamrolled through the playoffs with a pair of lopsided victories before eventually running out of gas in the divsion final.

The Sabres also had four players named to the Kas Vidruk Division all-star team: running back Patrick Maendel, quarterback Braden Saindon, offensive lineman Chad Falk and linebacker Moe Kemoh.
