Pistons defeat Kings in OT, again

You couldn’t have written the script this way even if you tried. For the second night in a row, the Steinbach Pistons scored the tieing goal in the third period and then won it in overtime as the Pistons defeated the Dauphin Kings 3-2 in overtime, the identical score from Friday night’s clash between the two MJHL teams. The Pistons improved their record to a perfect 12-0 this season.

Although Saturday’s victory by the Pistons wasn’t quite as dramatic as the previous night when the Pistons scored a last minute goal to send it to overtime, Saturday’s game had its share of dramatics as well as Tyler Anderson scored the winner 3:44 into the five-minute overtime, raising the roof on the old barn for the second straight night as the largest crowd of the season, 1,058, roared their approval.

Dauphin took a 2-1 lead into the third period before Troy Williams tied it for the Pistons midway through the third. Dauphin opened the scoring in the game on a Riese Garber goal eight minutes into the first but Mark Taraschuk tied it for the Pistons four minutes later.

Roman Bengert was again the winning goaltender for the Pistons as the Pistons outshot the Kings by a wide margin, 41-17. Brandon Holtby was outstanding in net again for the Kings making 38 saves. In the two games, Holtby stopped 66 of the 72 shots he faced.

If nothing else, you have to tip to your hat to both teams for their performances this weekend. First, to the Dauphin Kings, now 2-9-2, to garner a pair of points in a pair of overtime losses, in Steinbach no less, is a testament to their play this weekend. And for the Pistons, who were expected to win, to rally on both nights and win it in overtime is a sign of a great team, which they surely are.

Yes, it’s still early, in fact there are another 50 games to be played, and as we saw this weekend it’s not getting easier to win these games, to keep the streak alive, even against the lower ranked opponents as the Pistons are a marked team.

With the next few days off, the Pistons hit the road next weekend for a gruelling three games in three nights, stopping in Swan Valley on Friday and then have a pair of game at OCN Saturday and Sunday.
