The Steinbach Pistons salvaged a split in their weekend series in Virden as the Pistons escaped with a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Oil Capitals Saturday night. On Friday, the Pistons could never recover from a 4-0 deficit as the Oil Capitals won 4-1.

Steinbach’s record improves to 7-4 on the season, still fifth in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League standings but the Pistons have games in hand on three of the four teams ahead of them in the standings.

Saturday in Virden, trailing 3-1 after 40 minutes, the Pistons scored three unanswered goals in the third to pull out the win. Suede Omeesao, with his second of the game, notched the winner with 3:52 remaining in regulation. Omeesao had three points on the night.

Hayden Goderis had the other two Steinbach goals while Tyler Penner picked up three assists as he is now tied with defenceman James Shearer for the team scoring lead with 11 points. Defenceman Stephen Hak drew assists on two of the Steinbach goals.

Nick Deery made 21 saves to post the win as the Pistons outshot the Oil Capitals 30-24.

That ends a seven-game road trip as the Pistons now return home for three straight games at the T.G. Smith Centre as they will host three teams ahead of them in the standings, including fourth place Dauphin on Oct. 24, third place Winnipeg on Oct. 25 and the leading Portage Terriers on Oct. 29.
