Steinbach Pistons coach Paul Dyck today named his 24-player roster for the start of the 2014-15 Manitoba Junior Hockey League regular season. The Pistons open the regular campaign this weekend with a home-and-home series against the Winkler Flyers, kicking things off Friday night at Winkler and then returning back to Steinbach on Saturday for the home opener. Both games get underway at 7:30 p.m.

Comprising the core of the team are 11 returning players, including goaltender Nick Deery and defenceman Stephen Hak, the only returning rearguard this season. The forwards are led by eight veteran returnees, including Denis Bosc, Colin Baudry, Dan Taillefer, Tyler Penner, Hayden Goderis, Jonah Wasylak, Dustin Loeppky and Suede Omeasoo.

Mario Petit, the standout for the Eastman Selects last season, will complete the Pistons’ goaltending tandem. Petit was in camp with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips but rejoined the Pistons on Monday.

Leading the batch of newcomers on defence this year is four-year WHL veteran Landon Cross, along with James Shearer, Connor Martin, Braden Compton, Ryan Carlson and Jackson Robinson.

New to the forward line are Cole Smith, Jake Dickison, Matthieu Gomercic, Jordan Weir, Cole McCartan, Julien Koga and Quinn Wasylak.

There are six local players on the team, including Petit (Ile des Chenes), Bosc (Dufresne), Baudry and Taillefer (La Broquerie), Weir (St Adolphe) and Loeppky (Steinbach). There are six players from Winnipeg: Hak, Penner, Gomercic, Goderis, McCartan and Koga. Three others hail from Brandon: Cross, Compton and Shearer. There are also three players from Calgary including Omeasoo and brothers Jonah and Quinn Wasylak. Rounding out the list of Canadian players is Jackson Robinson from Nanaimo, B.C.

The Pistons’ roster also includes five Americans, including Deery from Wisconsin along with Smith, Dickison, Carlson and Connor, all from Minnesota. It is still possible other Pistons players may return to the team from other WHL squads over the next couple of weeks.
