The Steinbach Pistons bounced back to edge the Neepawa Natives 3-2 Sunday at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa to deadlock their Manitoba Junior Hockey League quarter-final series at one game apiece.

Neepawa, the eighth-ranked team in these MJHL playoffs, upset the top-ranked Pistons 4-1 in the series opener Friday in Steinbach.

The Pistons built up a a 3-0 lead only to see the Natives score two late third period goals to give the more than 1,100 fans on hand in Neepawa, the largest crowd they have had many years, something to cheer about as the Natives pushed to tie it in the dieing seconds.

Scoreless in the first, the Pistons took a 2-0 lead in the second on goals by Wyatt Hinson and Jordan Bochinski. Bochinski’s goal was huge as it came with only one second remaining in the second period.

Defenceman Ryan Carlson added Steinbach’s third goal midway through the third on the powerplay. Reigan Buchanan, adding to the two goals he scored Friday in Steinbach, narrowed the lead to 3-1 as he scored with four minutes remaining. Then Skyler Thorsteinson made it a one goal game as he scored with 48 seconds left on the clock.

Roman Bengert picked up the win in net for the Pistons making 20 saves as the Pistons outshot the Natives 38-22.

Game three in the best of seven series will be played Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Steinbach and then back to Neepawa for game four on Friday.

Elsewhere last night, Selkirk edged Portage 4-3 to tie that series 1-1, and Winkler outscored Virden 4-1 to go up 2-0 in the series. OCN also leads the Winnipeg Blues 2-0, winning game two 6-2 Saturday at OCN.
