With the pre-season now in the books the Steinbach Pistons shift gears this week to get ready for the opening of the 2014-15 Manitoba Junior Hockey League regular season. The Pistons open the regular campaign Friday night at Winkler, then return home to host the same Winkler Flyers in the home opener Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Steinbach.

In all, the Pistons played seven pre-season games, finishing up with a 4-2-1 record, following their home-and-home weekend sweep of the Selkirk Steelers. The Pistons were 2-1 winners in OT Friday in Selkirk, with the winner coming from newly christened captain Colin Baudry. Saturday at home, veteran Nicholas Deery served notice he is ready for the campaign as he stopped all 40 shots he faced to post the shutout in a 5-0 victory over the Steelers.

The Pistons’ roster may be in flux for the next few days as Western Hockey League teams also get down to their final rosters and it’s likely some players currently with WHL teams could return to the Pistons.

The Pistons return to the ice for practice this afternoon with a roster that has largley been set, with the exception of the WHL players.

Of course the MJHL has done away with the divisions this year and all 11 teams will be playing in one division. Also, more than ever, MJHL games will be played mostly on weekends. The Pistons have four games in the month of September, all on the weekend, including home games in Steinbach on Sept. 20, 26 and 27.

The annual MJHL Showcase will be held Oct. 2-4 at the MTS Iceplex.
