The Steinbach Pistons blanked the Selkirk Steelers 3-0 Sunday night at Selkirk to improve their Manitoba Junior Hockey League record to 2-0 as opening weekend is now complete.

Veteran netminder Roman Bengert posted the shutout making 21 saves as the Pistons outshot the Steelers 36-21 in front of a paltry 310 spectators in Steeltown.

Ryan Carlson staked the Pistons to a 1-0 lead in the first and then Sean O’Leary made it 2-0 Steinbach at 6:46 of the second, before Troy Williams gave Steinbach a commanding 3-0 lead as he scored with one second left in the second. Landon Plett set up two of the Steinbach goals.

The Pistons are now in a four-way tie for first in the league as the Portage Terriers, OCN Blizzard and Winkler Flyers are also 2-0. Selkirk, after sweeping the Winnipeg Blues Friday and Saturday, were gunning for their third straight victory to open the season.

Elsewhere on Sunday, OCN edged Waywayseecappo 4-3 and Portage defeated Virden 7-4, completing their weekend sweep of the Oil Capitals.

Portage will be in Steinbach on Wednesday as the two MJHL titans will hook up at 7:30 p.m. at the T.G. Smith Centre. The Terriers are the two-time defending MJHL champions, having defeated the Pistons in each of those two MJHL championship series.
