The Southeast Prairie Thunder, the 2012 Allan Cup champions, who are loosely based in Steinbach, Grunthal or Winnipeg, or any place they can find some practice ice, are headed back to the Allan Cup.

Southeast swept the Rosetown Red Wings three straight during the weekend at Rosetown, Sask., in the Manitoba/Saskatchewan Senior AAA finals to qualify for the 2015 Allan Cup, being staged April 13-18 at Clarenville, Newfoundland.

The Prairie Thunder, which included Dale Butland from Steinbach and Ryan St. Laurent from Ile des Chenes, swept the Red Wings 5-0, 4-0 and 6-3 on three consecutive nights in Rosetown, beginning Friday night, fortuitously ending it Sunday afternoon so they didn’t have to play on.

Other notables on the team included former NHL veteran Terry Yake from the St. Louis Blues and former Manitoba Moose Justin Kurz. Steve Christie was in nets for the all three wins at Rosetown.

Prairie Thunder general manager Marv Kornelsen said they had between 13 and 17 skaters at various times of the weekend vs. the Red Wings and he is still working on his roster for the Clarenville Allan Cup. The Prairie Thunder will be the host team of the 2016 Allan Cup, which will be staged next April in Steinbach.
