It was not the result the Southeast Prairie Thunder had expected. The 2012 Allan Cup champions, in their sixth foray to the Allan Cup national senior AAA hockey championships, were edged 3-2 by the Kenora Thistles in the quarter-finals of the 2014 Allan Cup Thursday night at Dundas, to be eliminated from the competition.

The Thunder, 4-3 losers to Dundas then 3-1 winners over the rival Bentley Generals, finished second in their pool, and faced winless Kenora, third from the other pool. Losing to Kenora, after beating Bentley the previous game, was unexpected, to say the least.

While their season is over and the Prairie Thunder are on their way back to Manitoba, the Red River Wild, Carillon Senior Hockey League champions, are still alive and well at the Manitoba Cup Provincial Senior ‘A’ Championships, following their 7-5 win over the Lac du Bonnet Blues Thursday night at MTS Iceplex.

The Wild will now take on the Deloraine Royals in the provincial semi-finals of the six-team competition tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. at the Iceplex. The other semi-final, an all SEMHL affair, pits the Morden Redskins against the Altona Maroons at 5:00 p.m. The championship game will be played Saturday at 5:00 p.m.at MTS Iceplex.
