Red Wings advance, oust Huskies

Gavin Froese scored four goals to lead the Grunthal Red Rings to a decisive 6-2 victory over the Steinbach Huskies Friday night in Steinbach in the fifth and deciding game of their Carillon Senior Hockey League quarter-final series.

The Huskies had beaten the Red Wings 1-0 in game four Wednesday in Steinbach to extend the series.

Tyler Pope and Travis Martens also scored for the Red Wings, while Jeff Penner picked up three assists, giving him a leading 10 points in the series.

Kevin Burton and Tanner Harms, with his playoff leading sixth goal of the series, replied for the Huskies.

Brett Gagnon was superb in net for the Red Wings making 39 saves as the hometown Huskies outshot Grunthal 41-34.

The Red Wings, who finished sixth in the standings, three points back of the fifth place Huskies, will now face the pennant-winning and defending champion Ste Anne Aces in the best of seven semi-finals. That series will get underway Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in Grunthal.

Meanwhile, the other series between the Springfield 98s and Red River Wild kicks off tonight at 8:00 p.m. at St. Jean.
