The defending Carillon Senior Hockey League champion Ste Anne Aces have picked up right where they left off.

In their first game of the post-season last night at Grunthal the Aces pounded the Red Wings 8-1. By finishing first in the loop this year, the Aces had the first round bye in the playoffs, while the Red Wings, fifth in the regular standings, got by the Steinbach Huskies in four games in their quarter-final.

Colin Lafreniere paced the rested Aces with three goals on the night while Steph Pattyn contributed a goal and four assists to the cause. Pat Normandeau with two, Steph Massicotte and Brent Wold completed the Ste Anne scoring.

Jeff Penner spoiled Guy St. Vincent’s shutout bid as he scored Grunthal’s lone goal with only 40 seconds remaining in the game. St. Vincent made 27 stops for the victory.

Game two in the best of seven series will be played Friday at 8:00 p.m. at Ste Anne and then back to Grunthal for game three on Saturday, also at 8:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, the other semi-final series between the Red River Wild and Sptringfield 98s continues tonight at 8:00 p.m. at St. Jean. Springfield won the opening game of the series 9-3 Saturday at St. Jean.
