Grades nine and 10 players at the Steinbach Regional Secondary School will now have more of an opportunity to play football at the school as the SRSS is adding a junior varsity team next season.

Jamie Peters, head coach of the varsity football program at the SRSS, who was involved in the formation of the program at the school seven years, says it was always a dream, or in the plan, to start a junior varsity program as well that would augment the varsity team, giving the grades nine and 10 players at the school more of an opportunity to play football under their school colours.

Peters, who remains as head coach of the varsity team will also oversee the junior varsity program, although the JV Sabres will have their own coaching staff, headed up by John Friesen.

“It’s all systems go,” Peters told The Carillon this week, “we have the equipment and the coaches are all in place.”

Peters says right now they are attempting attract interested players currently in grade eight who will be attending the SRSS next year and might be interested in playing football for the new team.

As such, there will be a first time player/parent meeting on Wednesday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the SRSS theatre.

Last season there were six teams in the junior varsity league: Vincent Massey (Winnipeg), Oak Park, St. Paul’s, Sisler and Grant Park, with Vincent Massey winning the league title. All games are held on Wednesdays and the Sabres will play their home games in Steinbach.

Other two key coaching positions with the new team will be filled by a pair of former alumni, both of whom have been on the varsity team’s coaching staff in recent years as Kerry Friesen will be the offensive co-ordinator and Derek Plett the defensive co-ordinator.

Peters says with the addition of a junior varsity team it will allow the grade 10 players who were previously with the varsity team and often getting limited playing time, to become regular players with the JV team, better preparing them to join the varsity program when they reach grade 11.

Previously the varsity team would have between 40 and 45 players and Peters says he sees both teams in the first year having about 35 players, with hopefully those numbers increasing in future years.

The Sabres will have a rookie camp for all new players in the program April 24-27. The main spring camp, for all players, including newcomers, will be held May 1 to June 1.
