Sabres fall in WHSHL final

The Springfield Sabres defeated the SRSS Sabres 3-2 Thursday at the MTS Iceplex in the third and deciding game of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League Winnipeg Free Press Division championship.

The Sabres took a 1-0 lead in the first on a goal by Nico Chiasson, but Springfield led 2-1 after 40 minutes as Max Brook tied it four minutes into the frame and Riley Darragh scored a huge goal for Springfield with 19 seconds left in the period to give Oakbank team the lead at the break.

Just 13 seconds into the third Springfield scored again as Blake Selmaschuk beat Oilver Peters in what proved to be the winning goal. Two minutes later Hyde Rickard scored to narrow the lead to 3-2.

And for the for next 17 minutes the SRSS pressed to get the equalizer but just couldn’t get the tying marker past Matt Slezak as Springfield hung on to win in what was a classic championship game.

Springfield won game won of the series 4-2 on Monday before the SRSS bounced back to win game two 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday to force yesterday’s deciding game.
