The SRSS Sabres junior varsity boys volleyball team have been knocking on the door the past three years in their attempts to win the Provincial AAAA Junior Varsity title. But that quest will have to wait another year as the Sabres took the top ranked Lord Selkirk Royals to a fifth and deciding set Monday night in the provincial final at Investors Group Centre at the University of Manitoba.

Selkirk won the deciding set 15-11. The second ranked Sabres took the opening set 27-25, but the Royals battled back to win the next two by scores 25-17 and 25-21. But then, with the match on the line, the Sabres dug deep in the fourth winning 25-20 to force a decider.

These two teams flip-flopped in the one-two position all season long in the provincial rankings and these two teams played at an extremely high level in this five-set thriller in front of several hundred fans at the U of M.

Brayden Kehler and Spencer Teetaert from the Sabres were both named to the tournament all-star team.

In the earlier girls final, Jeanne Sauve swept Selkirk three straight.

Of course, now that the junior varsity provincials are complete, the AAAA varsity final four will be at the U of M this Thursday as the defending provincial champion SRSS Sabres, ranked second in the field this year, will take on third ranked St. Paul’s at 8:00 p.m., with the winner advancing to the provincial final Monday at 8:00 p.m. at the U of M.
