The SRSS Sabres high school hockey team were hoping they could add two more victories to their incredible 21-game winning streak, including six straight in the playoffs.

But it was not to be Monday at the MTS Iceplex as the Sabres dropped a 4-2 decision to the Springfield Sabres in the opening game of the Winnipeg High School Hockey League Winnipeg Free Press Division finals.

Game two in the best of three series will be played today at 5:00 p.m. back at the Iceplex.

The Sabres rolled through three rounds of the Division #1 playoffs without a blemish, including a sweep of the top ranked St. Paul’s Crusaders.

Springfield meanwhile, was coming off a tough three-game series victory over the Transcona Titans in the Division #2 finals, and kept that momentum going on Monday in taking game one from the SRSS.

SRSS trailed from the outset as Springfield skated to period leads of 1-0 and 2-0. Logan Waskul paced Springfield with a pair of goals while Blake Stelmaschuk and Dillon Rebeck added singles. Nico Chiasson and Matthew Broesky were the SRSS goal scorers.

Should the SRSS extend the series today, the deciding game would be played Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Iceplex.
