A win over the Sanford Sabres Wednesday in Steinbach in the final game of the regular season would clinch first place for the SRSS Sabres in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s Winnpeg Free Press Division.

The Sabres edged the Kildonan East Reivers 5-4 Monday afternoon in Steinbach to maintain their one-point lead over the Westwood Warriors, who were also winners yesterday. This stage was all set up when the Sabres beat the Warriors last week to take over the lead for the first time this season.

Kildonan East was a handful for the Sabres yesterday as the Sabres fought through an injury to starting goaltender Oliver Peters in the third as Avery Neufeld came on in relief and the Sabres hung on for the 5-4 victory. Nico Chaisson notched the winner for the Sabres with four minutes remaining in regulation.

The Sabres jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first on a pair of goals by Caleb Paisley and also led 4-2 after 40 minutes as Kyle Desjardins and Kylie Fender found the mark for the Sabres.

SRSS now has 17 wins, three losses and a shootout loss in 21 games this season.

Game time Wednesday in Steinbach in the final regular season against the Sanford Sabres is 4:00 p.m. at the T.G. Smith Centre.
