Sabres to face Royals in provincial final

All season long the SRSS Sabres and Lord Selkirk Royals have been the ranked the top two teams in the province in the ‘AAAA’ provincial high school volleyball rankings. These two JV powerhouses will meet in the provincial final tonight (Monday) at 8:00 p.m. at Investors Group Centre at the University of Manitoba.
Selkirk came into this year’s provincial championships ranked first, just ahead of the Sabres. Both those teams sailed through their playoff matches this past weekend in Winnipeg to set up tonight’s penultimate match.
Steinbach swept seventh ranked River East 25-11, 25-16 and 25-13 in the quarter-finals before defeating third ranked Neelin 3-1 in the semis, winning by scores of 25-15, 25-17, 16-25 and 25-18. Selkirk defeated eighth ranked Brandon Vincent Massey and fifth ranked St. Paul’s in their playoff matches.
The provincial junior varsity champions were also decided in the other categories this weekend, and in an all Zone 13 final in the A/AA boys championship at Shilo, the Niverville Panthers defeated Gabrielle Roy les Roys from Ile des Chenes 11-25, 25-19, 15-11 to claim the provincial title. Niverville’s Austin Anderson was named tournament MVP.
Meanwhile, the ‘AAAA’ varsity provincial championships also got underway on the weekend and the defending SRSS Sabres won their opening match as they swept MBCI 25-11, 25-18, 25-19. The Sabres now advance to the final four Thursday night at Investors Group Centre at the U of M as the second ranked Sabres will face third ranked St. Paul’s in the semi-finals at 8:00 p.m. Miles Mac and Vincent Massey square off in the other semi. The winners advance to the provincial final next Monday at 8:00 p.m. back at the U of M.
The provincial high school varsity volleyball championships will be held in all categories this coming weekend, including the ‘A’ Girls championships at La Broquerie, the ‘A’ Boys tournament at Rosenort and the ‘AA’ Boys provincials at Dominion City, with all those championships getting underway Thursday morning.
