Smith powers Pistons past Kings

Power forward Cole Smith scored two goals and added an assist to spark the Steinbach Pistons to a 4-1 victory over the Dauphin Kings in Manitoba Junior Hockey League action Friday night in Steinbach.

Scoreless after the first, Denis Bosc and Hayden Goderis scored powerplay goals late in the second to give the Pistons a 2-0 lead. But the Kings responded with a powerplay goal of their own in the final minute of the second period to make this a one goal game after 40 minutes.

Smith scored just 25 seconds into the third and added his second four minutes later and the Pistons hung for a 4-1 victory. Steinbach outshot Dauphin 39-23 as Jeremy Wik picked up the win in net for the Pistons.

Smith now has 19 goals and 49 points in 45 games played this year. Dan Taillefer picked up two assists on the night moving him up to fourth in the MJHL scoring race with 67 points in 51 games.

Elsehere in the MJHL on Saturday: Winnipeg downed Virden 4-1, Swan Valley destroyed Selkirk 11-0, Portage defeated Waywayseecappo 8-2 and Winkler trounced Neepawa 8-1.

The Pistons, with points in 14 straight games, remain in second place in the standings with an imposing 39-9-3 record, still 13 points back of the leading Portage Terriers although the Pistons have three games in hand on the Terriers.

Steinbach returns to action tonight at as the Neepawa Natives come to town. Game time at the T.G. Smith Centre is 7:30 p.m. The Pistons will then complete their three-game weekend series at home Monday as they host the Winnipeg Blues at 2:30 p.m.
