The Canada Games Torch Relay will kick-off a province-wide trek in the coming weeks with a run through Steinbach Friday morning.

The torch was first lit at Parliament Hill earlier this month at the Centennial Flame and has now arrived in Manitoba and will make its provincial debut in Steinbach Friday morning as the Canada Games Torch Run receives its official launch.

Prior to travelling to Steinbach for Friday’s kick-off of the torch run, the Canada Games torch was used to light the historic, 50-year-old Centennial Flame on Memorial Boulevard in Winnipeg on Wednesday, which glowed brightly in front of the Manitoba legislature during the 1967 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg. Aptly the Canada Summer Games are celebrating their 50th anniversary as the Games are held in Winnipeg this summer from July 28 to August 13.

The Steinbach portion of the Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay kicks off Friday morning at the Manitoba Hydro Office with ceremonies at 10:30 a.m., with all the requisite dignitaries on hand. The actual run will start at 11:00 a.m., which will be four kilometres in length.

From the Manitoba Hydro building, the torch relay will go down Hwy 52, turn right on Brandt and then left on Reimer Avenue off of Brandt, up to Main Street and then back to the Manitoba Hydro building, where a community barbecue will be held.

In all there were 37 applications that were received for the Steinbach portion of the relay and a special committee selected 15 of those to run, based on a variety of criteria and wide range of ages.

The Steinbach Torch Relay torchbearers are as follows: Jonas Desrosiers, Sabrina Castellano Smith, Kyana Brown, Luis Reis, Gilbert Fehr (still riding high following his Special Olympics gold in bowling last week at Brandon), Jared Driedger, Amanda Peters, Michelle Sawatzky-Koop, Ivann Miloutinov, Teagan Mitchell, Francois Grenier, Amanda Clark, Allison Mack, Reese Tufford and Steffan Reimer.

Each torchbearer will carry the torch about 275 metres until handing if off to the next runner. Many will be running together with family and friends. Steffan Reimer, who just finished fourth in Sunday’s Manitoba Marathon, is expected to be running with some of his students from Mitchell.

Following the Steinbach Torch Relay, it will move on to other communities over the next month, traversing 3,500 kilometres in total.

Rounding out the Torch Relay schedule will be: Kenora (June 24), Morden (June 29), Gillam (July 1), Thompson (July 6), The Pas (July 10) Sagkeeng (July 14), Gimli (July 15), Brandon (July 20) and finally Winnipeg (July 26).
