The Carillon Sultans split a Manitoba Junior Baseball League doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Ile des Chenes against the Altona Bisons.

Altona won the first half of the twinbill by a 3-1 count but the Sultans bounced back to take game two by a 9-6 margin, which ended a three-game losing streak for the Sultans.  The Sultans also lost 3-0 to St. James Friday night at Steinbach.

In the opener, Carillon outhit the Bisons 7-4 but could only muster a single run for their efforts as they went down to a 3-1, defeat despite a strong pitching effort from Jared Esau.

In the second game the Sultans got the bats rolling as they jumped into a 7-2 lead after four innings, scoring three times in each of the third and fourth innings, and hang on to win in the 9-6 final. Liam Lenton and Noah Vogt each had three hits each for the Sultans.

Carillon’s record is now 7-6 on the season, fifth in the loop, while the Bisons are in fourth at 6-5. But the Sultans remain one of five teams still in the battle for first place in the bunched up standings. St. James leads at 10-4, followed by Elmwood and Brandon at 9-5.

The Sultans are back in action Tuesday night on the road as they take on the St. James A’s at 7:00 p.m. at Optimist Park in Winnipeg. Then Wednesday the Sultans will face the St. Boniface Legionaires at 7:00 p.m. at Whitter Park.
