The Elmwood Giants scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday night at Koskie Field in Winnipeg to edge the Carillon Sultans 2-1 in the opening game of the Manitoba Junior Baseball League best of five semi-finals.

Game two in the series will be played tonight (Monday) at 7:00 p.m. at A.D. Penner Park in Steinbach. The Giants, who finished second in the regular season standings with a 17-7 record, only had one hit in the seventh, but capitalized on a walk and a Carillon error.

Scoreless through four innings, with the Sultans’ Nik Kauenhofen and Austin Smith of the Giants waging a battle on the mound, the Sultans finally took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as Kauenhofen drove in Markus Renaud with a two-out RBI single.

Kauenhofen and Smith both allowed four hits in the contest. Kauenhofen also fanned four on the night. The Sultans finished fourth in the regular season standings with a 12-12 record.

The other semi-final series also got underway on Sunday as the pennant-winning St. James A’s edged the sixth place Pembina Valley Orioles 3-2.
