Before lightning suspended play for the day late Monday afternoon, three players posted five-under scores of 67 on the opening day of the Nott Autocorp Manitoba Men’s Amateur Golf Championship at the Links at Quarry Oaks.

Two of the best golfers Manitoba has ever produced, Garth Collings and Todd Fanning, join Burke Wiebe atop the leaderboard. Seventy-eight golfers in the field 120 completed their round yesterday before play was halted.

Charlie Boyechko was a shot back with a 68 while Aaron Cockerill was 69. Eleven players were under par on the day including a one-under posted by Tyson Ehnes of Lorette.

Among local players Adam Guenther of Steinbach led the way with a 73 and junior players Stefan Lavallee and Cole Peters from Quarry Oaks were 75 and 77 respectively. Jon Schroeder of Quarry came in at 78.

All players that did not complete their round yesterday will resume where they left off at 8:00 a.m. this morning and then tee-off on round two as per their scheduled tee times. The top 60 players at the completion of today’s second round at Quarry Oaks will advance to the final two rounds of the championship Wednesday and Thursday at the Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg.
