Flyers double Pistons in opener

The Steinbach Pistons lost 4-2 to the Winkler Flyers in the opening game of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League regular season Friday night at Winkler.

Tied 2-2 after 40 minutes, the Flyers scored two unanswered goals in the third to score the season-opening victory in front of a crowd of 1,042. Winkler led 2-1 at the first intermission. Tyler Penner scored shorthanded for the Pistons in the the first and Cole McCartan tied it for the Pistons in the second. Winkler outshot Steinbach 31-25. Nick Deery took the loss in net.

In other games on opening night, Dauphin beat Swan Valley 5-4 in overtime, Winnipeg downed Selkirk 5-2, Neepawa edged OCN 4-3, and Portage trounced Virden 9-0.

The Pistons get another crack at Winkler tonight as they host the Flyers in their home opener at 7:30 p.m. at the T.G. Smith Centre. Tailgate barbecue, including entertainment from local band Cracked Egg Shell, gets underway at 6:00 p.m.
