Playing in his first regular season game with the St. Malo Junior Warriors last weekend at St. Malo, 17-year-old Robert Guimond provided some last second heroics for the Warriors that will be a topic of conversation for quite some time.

The Warriors, in their Keystone Junior Hockey League opener with a large crowd on hand on Friday, were tied 1-1 late in the game with the rival North Winnipeg Satellites when Guimond scored the winner with one second remaining in regulation.

“Well actually it was .9 seconds,” chuckled longtime coach Ralph Collette, “ and they’re calling it the biggest goal in Woodmore history.”

Guimond hails from the tiny hamlet of Woodmore south of St. Malo, and played midget hockey in Grunthal last season.

It was a pretty dramatic finish to the season opener for the Warriors and Collette says it sets the tone for a season in which they have very high hopes.

The Warriors played five pre-season games, compiling a 3-2 record leading up to last weekend’s season opener against the Satellites. Kyle Fortin opened the scoring for the Warriors with three minutes remaining in the opening frame, before the Satellites tied it on the powerplay with a minute left in the period.

The score remained 1-1 until Guimond’s dramatic unassisted goal ended it. Guimond also drew an assist on Fortin’s opener.

St. Malo has a week off between games until they finally return to the ice this Friday with a game at Arborg against the Ice Dawgs, beginning at 8:20 p.m. and then travel to Lundar on Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. start against the Falcons.

Assisting Collette in coaching the team this year are Dennis Senebald, Chris Baldoke and Michael Boles.

The 10-team KJHL has gone to two divisions, North and South, to reduce the amount of travel each club will make in a season. Joining the Warriors in the South Division are the Satellites, along with the Lundar Falcons, Selkirk Fishermen and Arborg Ice Dawgs. In the North are the Peguis Juniors, OCN Storm, Norway House Northstars, Fisher River Hawks and returning to the league are the Cross Lake Islanders.

Each team will play 34 games this season, 24 within in their division and a home-and-home with teams in the opposite division.

“Friday’s win was very exciting for our hockey club and our fans,” said Collette, the longest serving coach and general manager in the league, “we have added some good players  this year such as Riley Hunter, one of the leading scorers in the HTJHL last season.”
