Tyler Penner is quietly emerging as the premier player in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Saturday night at the T.G. Smith Centre in Steinbach Penner scored two goals and an assist, then scored the winner in the shootout as the Pistons edged the Winkler Flyers 5-4.

It was the fourth straight victory at home for the Pistons, with two of those coming over the Flyers in the last week. The Pistons, down 3-1 midway through the second rallied to pull this one out in front of 1,003 racuous fans. Colin Baudry, with his 17th of the year, narrowed the gap to 3-2 before the period was over. Penner, again seizing the moment, scored both his goals in the third period, including the tieing goal with 1:55 remaining in regulation. Not done yet, he then scored the winner in the fourth round of the shootout.

Penner, among the league leaders in goals and points, has 42 points in 35 games including 22 goals as he is now in position to take a run at the MJHL scoring title in the final two months of the season. Colton Veloso opened the scoring for the Pistons in the first period.

In their highest shot total of the season, incredibly the Pistons outshot the Flyers 58-20, including 20-3 in the third period.

Now the hottest team in the MJHL, it should be a very merry Christmas for the hard working Pistons as they go into the one-week Christmas break with a 22-9-4 record, still fourth in the standings, but just two points behind the second place Blues and third place Flyers. But the Pistons have an important three games in hand on the Flyers and two on the Blues as the Pistons have owned these two hockey teams in this home stand.

The Piston players have now dispersed across the continent as they have gone home for Christmas. They will reconvene on Dec. 28 to get ready for their annual New Year’s Eve game at 4:30 p.m. in Winkler.
