Steinbach’s Cole Peters, skipping a team out of the Granite Curling Club in Winnipeg, has qualified for the four-team playoffs following the round robin of the 16-team Provincial Junior Men’s Curling Championship ongoing at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg.

Peters qualified for Wednesday morning’s two vs. two game with a nail-biting 8-7 extra end victory over J.T. Ryan of Assiniboine Memorial today to qualify for the playoffs. Both Peters and Ryan went into the game with 5-1 records in their pool, and the loser was eliminated.

Matt Dunstone, the number one seed, 2013 champion, finished first in their pool with a 6-1 record, the same record as Peters. But Dunstone got the nod as he beat Peters 7-3 in their round robin game on Monday.

Peters is seeded third while defending champion Braden Calvert came in seeded second.

Peters, although only 18, the 2012 Provincial High School Curling Champion, is competing in his fourth junior men’s provincial championship.

Last year he was also seeded third, fnishing first in the round robin with a 6-1 record. In the one vs. one game he lost a tough 7-6 decision to Dunstone and then was eliminated 6-4 by Calvert, who went on to beat Dunstone in the final.

Peters will face Hayden Forrester of Winnipeg in the two vs. two game Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. The winner advances to the semi-finals at 12:15 p.m. vs. the loser of the one vs. one game (Dunstone vs. Calvert). The provincial championship final goes Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., with all games at Assiniboine Memorial.

At stake is a trip to the 2015 M & M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships, beginning Jan. 24 at Corner Brook, NL.
