For the past three years, Steinbach’s Cole Peters has been one of top junior curlers in the province, but that provincial title has eluded him so far. However, he did skip his Steinbach Christian team to the Provnicial High School Curling Championship in 2012.

Peters, who is skipping a team out of the Granite Curling Club in Winnipeg, is again one of the favourites as he is seeded third at the Provincial Junior Men’s Curling Championsips, being held Dec. 26 to Dec. 31 at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club in Winnipeg. Seeded ahead of him is defending champion Braden Calvert at number one and then 2013 champion Matt Dunstone.

Peters, still only 18, is competing in his fourth junior men’s provincial championship. Last year he was also seeded third, where he went 6-1 in the round robin. In the one vs. one game he lost a tough 7-6 decision to Dunstone and then was eliminated 6-4 by Calvert, who went on to beat Dunstone in the final.

Rounding out the Peters team this year is Connor McIntyre, Derek Oryniak and Chris Gallant. And Cole’s father Wilf Peters is again the coach of the team.

Divided into two pools, each of the 16-teams will play seven round robin games with only the top two teams in each pool qualifying for the playoffs. Peters will first take to the ice Dec. 27 at 8:15 a.m. and will conclude his round robin schedule Dec. 30 at 8:30 a.m. Playoffs begin Tuesday night with the semi-finals going Wednesday (Dec. 31) at 9:30 a.m. The championship game will follow Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

At stake is a trip to the 2015 M & M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Championships beginning Jan. 24 at Corner Brook, NL.
