Behind another virtuoso performance from netminder Nick Deery, the Steinbach Pistons blanked the Winkler Flyers 2-0 Tuesday night in Winkler to move back into second place in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League standings.

Deery and Winkler’s Dasan Sydora waged a goaltending battle through the first two scoreless periods. Finally, Denis Bosc beat Sydora with the winner with 6:46 remaining in regulation. Daniel Taillefer later added an empty netter. Sydora ended up with 35 saves, while Deery, who posted his league-leading fourth shutout of the campain, stopped all 35 he faced. Deery, who has played the most minutes of any goaltender in the league, lowered his goals against average to 2.41, which is second overall behind Justin Laforest of the Portage Terriers. Deery also raised his save percentage to .916, which is tops in the league.

Elsewhere in the MJHL last night, Selkirk blanked Neepawa 4-0 and Swan Valley outscored OCN 7-4.

With the win, the Pistons, now 30-12-7, leapfrogged the Winnipeg Blues back into second place in the standings.

The Pistons take a break for their annual Fire & Ice fundraising banquet at Friedensfeld Community Centre tonight. Former NHL defenceman Shane Hnidy, now a TSN hockey analyst, will be the guest speaker. Perhaps Hnidy can shed some light on how the sad sack Winnipeg Jets, losers of five straight, can turn their season around.

The Pistons next see action Saturday night when they travel to Waywayseecappo to take on the Wolverines.
