In what would rank as the biggest goal of the season to date for the Steinbach Pistons, Landon Cross scored on the powerplay with 2:46 remaining in the second overtime period as the Pistons beat the Winnipeg Blues 2-1 in double overtime Friday night at the MTS Iceplex.

The Pistons are now tied 1-1 in the best of seven Manitoba Junior Hockey League semi-finals. The Blues won game one 3-2 in Steinbach, and avoiding a 2-0 deficit in the series for the Pistons was huge.

Cole Smith opened the scoring for the Pistons 5:51 into the opening period and Kamerin Nault tied it for the Blues six minutes later. But then for the next 76 minutes in this intense playoff battle, the score remained 1-1 until Cross finally notched the winner, to the delight of another large contingent of Pistons’ fans that made the road trip.

The Blues outshot the Pistons 32-26 as Nick Deery made 31 stops for the Pistons. In six post-season games to date, Deery has posted a sparkling 1.67 goals against average.

Game three in the series will be played Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in Steinbach. The series will then continue with game four on April 1 at the Iceplex and game five in Steinbach on April 2, both getting underway at 7:30 p.m..

Meanwhile, the Portage Terriers took a 2-0 lead in their semi-final series last night in Virden as they blanked the Oil Capitals 4-0.
