Two local high school basketball coaches, Jamie Rogalsky of Steinbach Christian High School and Darryl Pederson from Ross L. Gray School in Sprague, have been named Coaches of the Year by Basketball Manitoba for guiding their respective school teams to provincial titles this year.

The awards were presented Saturday in Winnipeg as part of the graduating all-star games and coaching and player awards from all the school categories.

Rogalsky, coach of the Flames boys’ team, guided the fifth ranked Flames to the ‘AA’ provincial championship at Niverville as they beat three teams ranked higher them along the way, inlcuding fourth ranked Carman, number one Killarney in the semi-finals and then they topped the second ranked Landmark 96ers in the provincial final.

Meanwhile Pederson, who coached the JV Raiders to the girls’ provincial title, was at the helm the following week as he led the third-ranked varsity Raiders to the ‘A’ girls provincial title at Glenboro. The Raiders had a perfect 30-0 season, culminating in their 54-46 victory over top ranked Grandview in the provincial final.

Individual player awards were also announced and the winner of the ‘A’ Male Player of the Year was Justin Goodman of the Ross L. Gray Raiders.

And several local players were also named to the All-Manitoba teams. Lianna Hebel of Ross L. Gray was named to the A/AA/AAA Female First Team while Caela Orteza of Lorette Collegiate were named to the Second Team. Alain Dumas of Landmark and Joshua Hebel-Allard of Ross L. Gray were named to the A/AA/AAA Male Second Team.
