The SRSS Sabres are no strangers to the Winnipeg High School Football League playoffs, but for the first time since joning the league five years ago, the Sabres will host a playoff game in Steinbach.

In the past, all post-season games were played in Winnipeg but Sabres coach Jamie Peters said this year a decision was made to play a game in Steinbach partly because of lower costs.

At any rate, Peters says they are working hard this week getting ready for Friday’s playoff game at A.D. Penner Park as the Sabres will host the Miles Mac Buckeyes at 4:00 p.m. in the Kas Vidruk AA Division quarter-finals.

With their 24-10 victory over the River East Kodiaks last Friday in Steinbach, the Sabres finished the regular season with a 5-2 record, the same mark as the Kelvin Clippers and Churchill Bulldogs, but the Sabres were awarded third place after the tie-breaking formulas. St. Paul’s finished on top with a perfect 7-0 record while Garden City, with their only loss at the hands of the Sabres, were second at 6-1.

Miles Mac placed sixth with a 2-4-1 record. The Sabres beat the Buckeyes 15-0 in their only meeting Sept. 26 in Winnipeg. The 5-2 record posted by the Sabres this year is the same record as last year, where they placed second, but then were upset by the Grant Park Pirates in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, the Lorette Scorpions are also having a banner season in their second year in the WHSFL. Lorette finished second in the Andy Currie ‘A’ Division with a 5-2 record and will host seventh-place Neelin (3-4) Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at Lorette in the division quarter-finals.
