For the first time in school history, Steinbach’s SRSS Sabres have advanced to the Provincial High School Volleyball Championship AAAA Varsity Boys Final Four.

The Sabres, who have been one of the top ranked teams in the province all season long, including several weeks ranked number one, came into this year’s championships ranked fourth, and will take on number one Miles Mac in the first semi-final this Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Investor’s Group Athletic Centre at the University of Manitoba. The other semi-final match at 8:00 p.m. will pit second ranked St. Paul’s against third ranked Selkirk. The winners advance to the provincial final, which be played Monday, Dec. 1 at 8:00 p.m. at the U of M.

SRSS advanced to the final four with an efficient sweep of fifth ranked MBCI in the quarter-finals Saturday afternoon as the Sabres won 25-20, 25-23, 25-16. The SRSS girls, ranked seventh, also competed in the quarter-finals on Saturday, but were swept three straight by second ranked MBCI as the Sabres lost 25-17, 26-24, 25-19.

The SRSS JV Boys were also competing in the AAAA JV provincial championships Saturday in Winnipeg. The Sabres, ranked fifth, lost in the provincial semi-finals Saturday afternoon at Garden City Collegiate to top ranked Garden City. The host team swept the Sabres 25-20, 25-23, 25-22. The Sabres led 15-7 at one point in the third set but couldn’t hang on to extend the match.

At the A/AA JV boys provincials on the weekend at Teulon, top ranked Green Valley wound up fourth and second ranked Steinbach Christian was eliminated in the quarter-finals as both teams failed to live up to their billing.

The provincial high school volleyball season will come to an attend this coming weekend as the varsity provincial championships in ‘A’, ‘AA’ and ‘AAA’ will be held at venues across the province.
