In a battle of the top two teams in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Monday night at St. Jean, Mason Dyck scored at 4:24 of overtime to give the visiting Grunthal Red Wings a 4-3 victory over the Red River Mudbugs.
Red River went into the game two points ahead of the Red Wings, so by taking this game into overtime, the Mudbugs, with that single point, maintain their grip on the HTJHL lead with 13 points on a record of 6-2-1 while the Red Wings are a point back at 6-3.
With Red River leading 3-2 in the third, Liam Butters, who also set up Dyck’s OT winner, tied it for the Red Wings with 5:36 remaining in regulation.
Eric Froese and Ryan Wiebe had the other Grunthal goals while Tyson Fehr, Jeremy Anstett and Callum Daulby responded for the Mudbugs.
The goaltenders were kept busy in this one as Cole Stoupe made 52 saves for the Red Wings while Chris Friesen stopped 46 at the other end for the Bugs.
HTJHL play will resume Friday night back at St. Jean as these same Mubugs host the Steinbach Huskies at 8:00 p.m.
