Steven Limburg plead guilty to breaching his release order’s curfew and assaulting his adopted sister at her home in La Broquerie in February.

On the night before Steven’s birthday, he and his girlfriend left the house to party, and only returned around 7:30 a.m. the next morning.

He’s been in custody since March 5 for disobeying curfew on Feb. 12.

Crown attorney Jennifer Neufeld said Steven’s sister tried to check on his girlfriend as she seemed upset and Steven thought his adopted sister was interfering, so he shoved and grabbed her.

His sister called the police as she was concerned about the safety of her children in the home, and Steven left the house when he found out law enforcement was being contacted.

Steven called his adopted mother and was screaming “at the top of his lungs.” He asked her not to make a report and demanded her to send him gas money because he was running out of gas. She sent him money, but on the condition that he didn’t come back to the home.

The victim wrote a victim impact statement which Neufeld read to the court.

“I’m a mom and I must protect my boys. That day they were forced to watch their mom being terrorized by you in a home that’s supposed to be safe,” she wrote. “I deal with PTSD more now… I have to make sure the doors are locked, my room doors are closed, and I sleep with my ears open. I’m afraid of you now more than before.”

Steven was diagnosed with ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder in Grade 5, court heard from a forensic report.

Michael Dyck, defence lawyer, said there were no injuries from the assault.

Judge Julie Frederickson sentenced Steven to the equivalent of six months in custody after credit for time served awaiting his day in court. He must now serve a year of supervised probation with conditions including counselling and having no contact with his adopted mother and sister.
