A Steinbach man accused of indecent acts in the vicinity of Bethesda Hospital earlier this year was uncooperative as he made his first court appearance in court last Thursday.

Elmer Dueck, 46, was arrested by Steinbach RCMP after several complaints of a male indecently exposing himself near the hospital in mid-April.

Dueck suggested to Judge Julie Fredrickson that he would not be getting a lawyer and did not intend to represent himself either.

“You can’t not do anything,” she advised him.

After rebuffing offers last Thursday morning to talk about the charges with a legal aid representative and the Crown, Fredrickson ordered not guilty pleas to be entered on Dueck’s behalf, part of a judge’s authority under the Criminal Code when an individual refuses to enter a plea.

The matter will return to court on July 19.
